Important Details after Heart Surgery

January 7th, 2010

Having a friend or a love one scheduled for a major operation is not easy to deal with what more if it concerns heart surgery. But I guess instead of consuming your energy fretting around, the best thing to do is to equip you self with knowledge and things to expect about the surgery.

Heart Surgery is not easy to perform and recover. Drugs are given to wake the patient slowly after the incision is closed. The patient will be taken to the ICU or the recovery area for care while coming out of anesthesia. The critical care environment is needed to provide the patient with one on one nursing care and steady observing.

Usually, breathing apparatus will remain in use, providing breathing support while the patient remains asleep. Once the anesthesia drugs lessen and the patient wake up, the breathing tube is removed and the patient is able to breathe on their own. The patient can now begin appropriate treatment. Pain medication is given to let the patient move without strong ache. Heart surgery is not a total cure for heart disease; but it is a highly effective treatment. A patient who does not follow their doctor’s instructions such as change their diet, quit smoking, exercise, lose weight or control their blood sugar may return to the hospital and repeat surgery. Some patients may need treatment after returning home to help gain back strength and energy.
